At the second virtual ceremony in a row due to Covid, Rochelle was honored for her exemplary devotion to the value of Tikkun Olam. Rochelle has made many important contributions throughout her years in CHJ including leading the production of our annual High Holiday services and programs, serving on CHJ’s board of directors, and for many years serving as our Mitzvah Program co-coordinator.
Barbara Jay - CHJ Mitzvah Hero

In the era of Covid-19, the Mitzvah Hero celebration went virtual! Barbara was honored for her years producing Shabbat services and programs for CHJ, creating the first CHJ website and e-newsletters and starting the Saul Haffner Jewish Enrichment Fund that produces major events in honor of her late husband. President Steve Getz does the honors.
Dana Preis - CHJ Mitzvah Hero

Dana Preis is CHJ’s Mitzvah Hero for 2019.
Dana is a builder and sustainer of community who has devoted his energies and talent to ensuring that CHJ remains vital and relevant to those who seek and value a humanistic Jewish community. He has been a consistent and powerful force in shaping and advancing our congregation and has emerged as one of CHJ’s premier role models.
Dana served as president for two consecutive terms, treasurer for seven years, and has chaired or served on countless task forces including helping to establish the Saul Haffner Jewish Enrichment Fund. He is the go-to guy for steady, reliable counsel rooted in his experience and wisdom. CHJ has benefited greatly from his devotion and talent.
Steve Ulman, CHJ Mitzvah Hero

As chair of the Social Action Committee, Steve spearheads projects like the Zero Waste recycling effort at the Federation Food Festival. He has helped organize a creative enrichment program at Neighborhood Studios in Bridgeport; planted a garden for special needs people at the Trumbull Nature & Art Center; introduced Food Rescue to CHJ, and helps teens and parents make sandwiches and collect clothing for those in dire circumstances.
