Fundraiser for Nothing But Nets

On March 25, the Teen Tzedakah Group had its Book and Bake Sale fundraiser to support Nothing But Nets in its fight against malaria. As a reminder, this organization sends bed nets to families in Africa to protect them from being bitten by malaria-carrying mosquitoes. For $10, Nothing But Nets can purchase and send a single bed net that will protect a single family of 2, 3, even upwards of 4 or 5 people.

The Sale was a huge success!! We had a great turnout: of both donations (of baked goods and books) and people who bought or donated. In fact, we had extra books and baked goods, the former of which we have donated to Books for Zim, Blackrock Elementary School and Six to Six Magnet School in Bridgeport, UJA/Federation's Books2Connect Program, and area libraries. We had a lot of help, and in total raised an outstanding $493 dollars! This is so much more than any of us, or any of the families in Africa, could ever have hoped for! This donation buys 49 bed nets. With each net protecting about 3 to 4 people each, that could be upwards of nearly 200 people protected! Wow!

So, to sum up, thank you so much everyone who contributed, participated, and joined us in this event! Thanks especially to those who helped in the sale, whether it was waking up early on your Sunday morning and taking on the monstrous role of sorting through ALL the books we had or staying throughout the Sale to help ensure that it ran smoothly. With your help, the Book and Bake Sale was all set for the "show" to begin and run to the end.   Again, thank you so much to all!

CROP Walk April 10 2011

Emily Snow and Abby Ulman represented the CHJ Teen Tzedakah Club at the 3.5 mile CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Hunger Walk in Westport. Two CHJ families, the Finns and Lawlors, also participated in this wonderful community walk.  The organizers (teens from the area) did an impressive job.

Online donations totaled $4,531.25. Funds raised help communities receive food in emergency cases and provide needed resources to help produce better harvests and access to clean water,

Thanks for the support of the Social Action Committee and Teri Klein.(Westport Now photo.)

Our Teen Tzedakh Club sold $75 worth of baked goods at our 3rd annual fair trade gift bazaar in December.  An additional $60 earned from sales of Ten Thousand Villages was added to that, and now the Teens have $135 toward their next bagged lunch mitzvah day event.
